Tunnel Vision

Ev has visions of tunnels in sand, in snow. Her tunnels tend to be mischievous in intent. She likes to make a network of tunnels under undisturbed sand and cackle when unsuspecting strollers find the ground giving way beneath them.

One day she tunneled under the back legs of my beach chair so that I toppled over backwards when the sand gave way.

On a recent trip to the beach her tunnel vision captured the imagination of 10 friends. They collaborated on the grandest vision yet: a tunnel big enough to crawl through. At last she saw the light at the end of the tunnel, and it was not a train, but the lit up face of a friend.

This post reminds me of the rooms my friends and I would dig in the empty lot behind the apartment building where I lived in AZ.

We would climb down into the room that smelled like earth and it was so cool in there, compared to the blazing desert above us. We were lucky they never collapsed and buried us.

I'm glad that Ev still plays with dirt. Many kids would rather play a game boy.

Yikes - 2 thoughts! What Fun and Could it collapse? Play with dirt, sand, mud, clay, water - hard to get any better :)

Kristin, wow that sounds amazing! And scary.

Mom, I was worried...the big kids didn't seem to scary because either their feet were sticking way out, or their heads were, but I watched the little ones carefully, so I'd be ready to grab a leg or arm and haul them out.
